The gut covers a large surface area of the body and faces variousexternal factors. The brain works in concert with commensalmicrobes in the gut to efficiently process the enormousamount of chemical signals that enter the gut every day. Thisreview discusses: (1) evidence that gut bacteria can alter braindevelopment and behavior, (2) mechanisms by which gutbacteria communicate with the brain, (3) preclinical and clinicalstudies demonstrating the impact of gut microbiota on autismspectrum disorder, and (4) variables worth consideration byfuture research on gut bacteria.
